I've transferred a few picture posts over to lavietoni.wordpress.com. I'm not sure if I'll stick to it or not, but I've been wanting to do a more simplified and organized photo blog. We'll seeee.

New from IKEA:

And a foot stool we're going to reupholster:

I bought it years ago but had been storing it at my parents' house and forgot about it until I went home.

I like the zebra.

And why do you have shampoo by your sink?

It's not shampoo, it's some kind of gel hair product! I get it because Biolage smells so good.

I like the zebra too, but it doesn't go with our stuff, and it's a little stained.

I used to love Biolage, but they test on animals which makes me sad.

I should have you come to inventory of my entire home.

I'm progressing slowly. When I first became vegetarian, I didn't even think about chicken/bacon/beef broths being used in my soups and other foods! Then when it was pointed out to me I started checking for clear signs of animal products (no more Ramen Noodles or Stovetop Stuffing, sadly). But I forgot about gelatin until you mentioned it, and now animal testing. Gr. It's easier when I buy products that advertise their ethics on the package (though that's always to be taken with a grain of salt, I'm sure), but I forget to check for so many things otherwise.

I am an avid label reader, not just for the animals but for myself. I like to know what I'm putting on my skin as so many compounds are so easily absorbed, and I'm always trying to avoid products tested on animals or with animal ingredients (like lanolin, which comes from sheep's wool, or carmine, which comes from beetles and is gross). Since there are so many cruelty-free alternatives to the products I typically buy (even for cheap-skates, as White Rain is cruelty-free), I don't see the need to get animal-tested products. Also, companies that take serious steps for cruelty-free products typically also have better work environments for their employees and use more ethically sourced ingredients. It's all connected.

The important thing to remember is that it's all about reducing suffering. Every little thing you do in your everyday life to prevent animal cruelty and worker exploitation is a step forward, even if you can't do it all the time for whatever reason (I still by Crest because I'm scared of all-natural toothpaste). It's also important to make your lifestyle not seem completely crazy and restrictive, because then other people you meet feel like it's not something they can ever do. But all of us can do small things every day, like using our consumer dollars to support products (and even health charities--Susan G. Komen uses funds for animal testing while Avon Crusade doesn't, and it's the same cause) that have certain values helps to in turn support those companies and create greater consumer demand for those types of goods. Vote with your dollars, yo.

P.S. Top Ramen Oriental Flavor = vegan, though not particularly healthy.

P.P.S. Buy the "Sage and Onion" stuffing (or some other flavor but that's my fave) in the bag and make it with vegetable broth. Add chopped onion and celery (buy the pre-cut kind for super convenience). Use Earth Balance margarine instead of butter. It's almost as easy as Stove Top. Enjoy.

LUSH cosmetics. I'd be incredibly happy to mail you a sample box for free. 100% vegetarian cosmetics, about 86% vegan, and absolutely cruelty free.

check out lushusa.com if you want and pick out like 5-10 things you'd want to sample.

email me @ francessanti@mac.com with your address.

I have to tell you, I've been a LUSH convert for a long time ... though I've given up on certain products (like the conditioner--Veganese is the only vegan one and I don't like it). But if you still want to send some my way, I won't complain.

PS what happened to the vegan lip balm that came out at Christmas? I thought that was going to be a permanent item.

Thanks! Yeah I probably won't live in this apartment much longer, but in the next place, I'll go more crazy with shelving and storage :b

Why? Just the actual issue of getting them installed correctly? I would never have done it without help, but I'm thrilled now that they're up.

We made the mistake of going to Ikea yesterday when a stock pot was on sale for 9 dollars AND they were giving away free breakfast.

It was a madhouse.
